While the coronavirus pandemic has disrupted education across the world, the impact of school closures has been much worse in developing countries where most pupils lack access to quality education.

It is said that improving access to quality education, particularly in Africa, is the panacea and permanent cure for socio-economic ills on the continent.

International Mother Language Day is annually celebrated on 21 February to honour the linguistic and cultural diversity in the world. The High Commission of India in South Africa this year hosted the third edition of Mataram where Indian diaspora groups showcased the linguistic culture of their regions through various forms of cultural performances.

The Embassy of Ireland in South Africa together with the Department of Science and Innovation and the Technology Innovation Agency launched a new innovation fund to nurture entrepreneurship and technology partnerships between South Africa and Ireland.

The Irish Tech Challenge South Africa aims to encourage mutually beneficial partnerships between leading Irish technology experts and South African entrepreneurs to support innovation, technology development, technology deployment and commercialisation in South Africa.

“Some men and women still believe that women cannot lead, but the time for women to remove the imaginary limitation has arrived, the time for women to remove the glass ceiling on leadership has come, the time for women to contest positions held by men has come, the time for women to express themselves freely without fear of any contradiction has come, the time for all of us to promote equality is here,” said Nkosikazi Nomandla Dorothy Mhlauli, Chair of the National House of Traditional Leaders and Khoi San leaders (NHTKL). She was speaking to the Diplomatic Society after being elected as the Chairperson of the NHTKL. She is the first woman to hold this position since the inception of the NHTKL in 1997.

Today I would like to celebrate the 62nd birthday of His Majesty the Emperor. Due to difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is highly unfortunate that I am unable to host the reception to celebrate His Majesty the Emperor’s birthday this year, as we were also unable to celebrate last year.

On this auspicious day, I would like to share with you my thoughts on relations between Japan and South Africa, especially in light of the Eighth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD8), which will be held this year in August.
