The Brazilian government announced the formal entry of the Republic of Indonesia into BRICS as a full member on 6 January. Brazil, which holds the rotating presidency of the group for 2025, said that the BRICS leaders endorsed Indonesia’s candidacy during the Johannesburg Summit in August 2023, as part of the group’s expansion process for full members.
The Government of Indonesia welcomed the announcement by Brazil saying in a statement that this milestone reflects Indonesia's growing and active role in global affairs and its commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation for a more inclusive and equitable global order. “Indonesia views its membership in BRICS as a strategic step to enhance collaboration with, and also between, fellow emerging economies in advancing the shared principles of equality, mutual respect, and sustainable development.
“As a growing and diverse economy, Indonesia is committed to contributing actively to the BRICS agenda, including promoting economic resilience, technological cooperation, sustainable development, and addressing global challenges such as climate change, food security, and public health. Indonesia believes that BRICS provides a valuable platform for fostering South-South cooperation and ensuring that the voices and aspirations of developing countries are heard and reflected in global decision-making processes. We remain dedicated to working closely with all BRICS members, as well as with others, to build a just, peaceful, and prosperous world,” the statement said.
Indonesia also extended its appreciation to Russia as the 2024 BRICS Chair for its support and leadership in facilitating Indonesia's entry into BRICS.
The Brazilian government said that as the largest economy and most populous nation in Southeast Asia, Indonesia shares with other BRICS members the support for the reform of the global governance institutions and contributes significantly to the deepening of Global South cooperation, priorities that align with Brazil's theme for its presidency: “Enhancing Global South Cooperation for a More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance".
