Inaugurating symbolic memorial garden for Turkish Democracy and National Unity Day

Today (15 July) marks the 4th anniversary of the heinous coup attempt, perpetrated by the Fethullahist Terror Organisation (FETO), with the intention of overthrowing the democratically elected Government and the constitutional order in Turkey, leaving behind a casualty of 251 dead and 2195 injured.

This year, on the occasion of the anniversary of the thwarted coup attempt, the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Pretoria inaugurated a symbolic memorial garden in the Embassy premises, dedicated to the martyrs who lost their lives defending Turkey.

Due to the restrictions in place due to COVID-19 in South Africa, a number of digital activities are also planned to commemorate, including a webinar titled “Democracy, Freedom and Importance of Leadership: Lessons for a Better World”.

H.E. Ambassador Elif Çomoğlu Ülgen, Ambassador of Turkey to South Africa hosted the webinar with the participation of ANC Deputy Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, COO of Thembekile Mandela Foundation and the Program Director of “Leading Like Mandela” Dr. Liyaqat Azam, as well as academics from Turkey, Prof. M.Akif Kireççi (Member of the Presidential Security and Foreign Policies Board and Lecturer at Ankara University of Social Sciences) and Dr. Ufuk Ulutaş (Chairman of the Center for Strategic Research (SAM) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), under the auspices of Presidency’s Directorate of Communications.

Yunus Emre Institute in Johannesburg will also hold a live event titled “July 15 Coup Attempt in Turkey and People’s Victory” today at 18h30. Both events will be shared on social media accounts.

Turkish Embassy in Pretoria would like to take this opportunity to thank the people and the Government of the Republic of South Africa for their support to Turkey.
