Russian Ambassador Rogachev pays respects to heroes

Ambassador-Designate of the Russian Federation to South Africa, HE Mr Ilya Rogachev’s first duty was to visit Freedom Park in Tshwane (Pretoria), a heritage precinct documenting the history of people from the dawn of humankind.

Laying a wreath at the Wall of Names at the Russian section, Rogachev paid his respects to former Soviet soldiers who lost their lives in the freedom war against the heinous apartheid regime. He also placed a wreath at IsIvivani, the Garden of Remembrance, which is the spiritual connection with the ancestors.

In a media statement respect for the many stalwarts of the anti-apartheid struggle including Nelson Mandela, Moses Kotane and Oliver Tambo was expressed. It also acknowledged the Soviet support for the liberation movements and also committed to continuing and strengthening historic relations between the Russia and South Africa.

Ambassador Rogachev joined the diplomatic service in 1984 and served as junior officer at the Embassy of the USSR in France, then at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR/Russian Federation and Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations. He was Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Security Council. From 2009 to 2019 he served as Director of the Department oo New Challenges and Threats at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

During his tenure in South Africa Ambassador Rogachev aims to embark on the ‘Nelson Mandela commemorative tour’, visiting key locations as a pilgrimage to Madiba.
