Ecuador celebrates Mandela

18 July 2019

Nelson Mandela International Day (or Mandela Day) is an annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela, celebrated each year on 18 July, Mandela's birthday. The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009.

Mandela Day is meant to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela, South Africa's former President, and his values, through volunteering and community service.

Ambassador of Ecuador Maria Soledad Cordova this year hosted Latin American women to a walk in celebration of Mandela Day. Her aim was to share with these women what Mandela stood for and to emphasise that Mandela's legacy is not isolated in South Africa, he is a legacy to the entire world.

For many, including many missions represented in South Africa, the day was spent contributing, uplifting and sharing.
