Kuwait and South Africa celebrate 25 years of Diplomatic Relations

H E Mr Hamad Suleiman Al-Mashaan, Assistant Foreign Minister for Africa Affairs of the State of Kuwait on his visit to South Africa had bilateral discussions with Ambassador Anil Sooklal, DDG Asia and Middle East at Dirco (pictured).

Discussions included the deepening of cooperation between the two countries and the official visit of Minister Sisulu to Kuwait later this year. It was also agreed to celebrate 25 years of Diplomatic relations established in May 1994 through a number of high level activities.

Diplomatic relations between South Africa and Kuwait were established on 20 May 1994. Former President Nelson Mandela paid an official visit to Kuwait in 1995.

In 1996 the State of Kuwait opened its Embassy in Pretoria and South Africa reciprocated by opening its Embassy in Kuwait City in 1997.

Two-way trade between South Africa and Kuwait was valued at R1,3 billion in 2017, with a trade balance amounting to R1,2 billion in favour of South Africa. In 2017, South Africa exported goods worth R1,2 billion, and it imported goods worth R28,3 million from Kuwait.
