Australia’s Sail Training Ship Young Endeavour sails into Cape Town

On 18 November 2015, STS Young Endeavour sailed into the V&A waterfront dock on the penultimate leg of its world voyage. The visit to South Africa was part of a 12-month circumnavigation of the world – the vessel’s first such deployment in over 20 years.

The voyage included the ship’s participation in Anzac Centenary Commemorations in Gallipoli, Turkey in April 2015 and representing Australia during the 2015 International Tall Ship Races in the North Sea. The vessel departed Rio de Janeiro en route to Cape Town on 24 October.

In addition to bilateral engagement with the South African Navy during its port visit, the Young Endeavour crew participated in community outreach and development activities in Cape Town facilitated by the Australian High Commission, including a cricket clinic with about 120 children at the Khayelitsha cricket grounds taking them through various drills and exercises.

The clinic was conducted by the Cricket School of Excellence whose community programs are being supported through the Australian High Commission’s Direct Aid Program over the next year.

The visit culminated in an open day on the STS Young Endeavour on Saturday 21 November where over 150 members of the public were taken on a tour of the square-rigged tall ship.
