South Asian University gets new President

New Delhi:  Eminent academician Dr. Kavita A. Sharma assumed the charge of President of the South Asian University on 3rd November 2014.  Before her appointment as the President of SAARC University, she was working as the Director of India International Centre (IIC).  Her appointment was made by the University’s apex body, the Governing Board, from a panel of three nominees submitted by the Government of India, being the host country, as per rules of the University.  Dr. Kavita Sharma was the Principal, Hindu College for about 10 years and has the distinction of being the first lady Principal of a co-education institution in the Delhi University.  She holds a doctorate in English from Delhi University and LLM from University of British Columbia, Canada and has written and published extensively with about half a dozen single author books to her credit.  Her published research articles in reputed journals cover a wide range of subjects such as Education, Literature, Theatre and Gender issues.  Dr. Sharma has been awarded several fellowships and awards.  Notable among these are Fullbright New Century Scholar for the year 2007-2008, Faculty Research Fellowship and Faculty Enrichment Fellowship by the Shastri Indo Canadian Institute in the years 1991-92 and 2002-03 respectively.

About South Asian University
South Asian University was jointly established by the member nations of SAARC in 2010 in New Delhi.  From two post graduate programmes in its first year, the University today offers 14 post graduate and research programmes.  The University draws its students, faculty and staff from the SAARC countries.  The University’s operational cost is borne by the member nations of the regional body while the capital cost for the establishment of its campus is borne by India.  SAU is currently functioning from its Akbar Bhawan campus in Chanakyapuri in New Delhi.  The construction of its permanent campus is starting soon in Maidan Garhi in South Delhi.
