10% Growth for South Africa
A 10% per annum growth for South Africa (SA) can be realized if an integrated mining beneficiation policy is implemented, says Prof. Iraj Abedian. He was speaking at the Centre for Japanese Studies (CJS) at GIBS on the subject of 'Moving South Africa's Mining Sector Towards Beneficiation'.
His detailed presentation explains how the discovery of resources and mining in the nineteen hundreds lead to the industrialisation of SA. Mining acted as a catalyst for energy, transport, telecommunication, human resource development and other infrastructure beneficiation.
Abedian argues that SA has the potential to re-industrialise larger than the scale of the 1950's and 1960's. This is attributable to the fact that SA has some of the largest mineral resources in the world. A recent report indicated that almost a quarter of the gold in the world was mined in SA.
Abedian's presentation goes further to outline how inspired leadership both in business and government, combined with enabling policy which removes infrastructural regultory bottlenecks, appropriate financing frameworks and a 'multi-stakeholder implementation coordination forum that links mineral beneficiation and manufacturing expansion can lead to economic growth of 10% in SA.

Historic wine made from Robben Island vines
Weltevrede Wine Estate had the honour of making a very significant wine for the 94th birthday of Mr Nelson Mandela. Seven years ago the dream was born when seven ancient vines were discovered in the prison garden on Robben Island. These vines grow where Mr Mandela buried his handwritten manuscript of Long Walk to Freedom in the prison garden.
