Chinese New Year is traditionally celebrated as an important family event. Ancestors as well as the gods of the household are honoured and celebrations run for 15 days, ending with the Lantern Festival.
In South Africa one of the main events will take place at the Nan Hau Buddist Temple in Bronkhorstspruit, just outside Pretoria.
Firework displays, dragon dancing, tea ceremonies and traditional Chinese food will mark the celebrations as festivities continue for several days. A festival of Chinese culture will take place on February 6 at the Temple.
Red is the colour of the festivities. It symbolises fire as protection from bad luck. Red clothes, red paper and even cash is given red envelopes.
