Celebrating Africa's World Heritage
The African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) celebrated the inscription of 5 African sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This record number of listings is a first for UNESCO, an achievement that the AWHF acknowledges is a big step towards a more balanced World Heritage List.
The five sites are Fort Jesus in Kenya, The Kenya Lakes System, The Konso Cultural Landscape in Ethiopia, The Saloum Delta in Senegal and The Archaeological Site of The Island of Meroe in Sudan.
Launched in 2006 in South Africa the AWHF has implemented a wide range of programmes and activities directed at improving the state of conservation of the cultural and natural sites in Africa and creating awareness of Africa's contribution to world heritage.
