With 30 million annual tourist arrivals and a 20% contribution to Thailand’s GDP, tourism, travel and hospitality are vital to Thailand’s economy. Ambassador Mungkorn Pratoomkaew of Thailand to South Africa shared his thoughts of Thailand and the growing relation with South Africa and the African continent.
Ambassador Pratoomkaew arrived in South Africa towards the end of the Covid-19 pandemic and the challenges of a global medical emergency.
Advancing friendship and goodwill between Japan and South Africa

This year the celebration of Japan’s National Day took place on 15 March 2023 in Pretoria, South Africa, a day after Ambassador Shigeru Ushio presented his credentials to President Cyril Ramaphosa where he conveyed the message from His Majesty the Emperor of Japan wishing for the advancement of friendship and goodwill between Japan and South Africa.
The Japanese nation commemorates their National Day on the 23rd of February as a celebration of the birthday of Emperor His Majesty Naruhito who celebrated his 63rd birthday this year. He ascended to the throne in 2019 which began the Reiwa era of beautiful harmony.
One of Ushio’s previous roles was Director General overseeing African Affairs at the Japanese Foreign Ministry. “I am very honoured to be assigned to South Africa, one of the leading countries in Africa and the world. I look forward to work with you to promote the relationship between our two countries,” Ushio said in his remarks during the National Day celebration.
King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief launches Food Basket Project in South Africa

The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) inaugurated the Ramadan Food Basket project in South Africa for the year 2023 on 29 March 2023, in the presence of the Saudi Ambassador to South Africa Sultan bin Abdullah Al-Angari, the representative of the Scholars Association in South Africa, and a team from the KSrelief.
The project aims to distribute 5,924 food baskets, each basket weighing 34 kilograms, containing basic foodstuff, benefiting 35,544 people in several cities including Johannesburg, Rustenburg, Kimberley, Hectorspruit, Middleburg, Bela-Bela and Limpopo. The project aims to distribute food baskets during the holy month of Ramadan to support those in need.
The aid comes within the relief and humanitarian efforts undertaken by the Kingdom through its humanitarian arm, KSrelief, to provide food security in many countries around the world.
Vietnam, South Africa explore cooperation potential

A working delegation led by Vietnamese Ambassador to South Africa Hoang Van Loi paid a working trip to KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province from March 16-20, as part of Vietnam’s economic diplomacy programme for this year.
During the trip, the delegation held working sessions with Trade and Investment KwaZulu-Natal (TIKZN), the management board of the Richards Bay Coal Terminal and the railway transport conglomerate Transnet.
Loi informed TIKZN CEO Neville Matjie about plans for the upcoming visit by Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien, including a B2B matching event in the province. Both sides agreed to successfully hold activities during the visit.

South African Royal Princesses Network empower young girls on Human Rights Day

The South African Royal Princesses Network celebrated, Human Rights Day with the children of the House Group, a Johannesburg based home for vulnerable girls.
The aim was to make this day an educational, gifting experience for the children. It was also about motivating young people to know they are loved and cared for, and to encourage them to achieve their goals thus creating hope and instilling confidence in them.
The Princesses shared experiences that make South Africa a better country. As it was Human Rights Day, the children were educated and mentored to reflect on their rights, to protect their rights and the rights of all people from violation, irrespective of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, whether they are foreign or national as human rights apply to everyone, equally.
