The resolution of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) firmly placed its confidence in General Secretary Xi Jinping who was overwhelmingly re-elected during the congress and the CPC Central Committee of seven to usher in a modern epoch of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

Ambassador Lin Songtian of China to South Africa (pictured left) was comprehensive in his briefing to academia and media gathered at the Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa on October 31. He shared his experience on attending this Congress, considered to be a historic milestone. He elaborated on the two major judgments of the Congress, namely the evolution of the principal contradiction facing the Chinese society and that China’s socialism has entered a new era.

Celebrating 25 years of Diplomatic Relations between Seychelles and South Africa
 
 
 
The High Commission of Seychelles in South Africa began a year-long celebration of 25 years of diplomatic relations with SA, with a Cultural Music Exchange.
 
The Mahe Chamber Choir, Arts Revelation and Soul Blend performed to an audience in Pretoria.
 
The 3 choirs, 1 from Seychelles and 2 from SA, culminated the performance with an entertaining collaboration. Mr Terry Rose from the High Commission also participated by singing with the choir.

Cooking Sri Lankan cuisine

 
On 27 October Champa Weerasekara, spouse of the Sri Lankan High Commissioner in Pretoria hosted a cooking demonstration and luncheon at her official residence. Members of the International Diplomatic Spouses Association (IDSA) attended the event.

Guests were welcomed by Mrs Weerasekara donned in traditional African dress and by Ms Paula Nkwana, Sri Lankan High Commission, who was wearing a traditional Sri Lankan sari.

Mrs Weerasekara demonstrated the making of 'pol roti', a very Sri Lankan dish. This is coconut roti which is a meal in itself with a pat of butter. The hostess explained that it is mainly eaten for breakfast but can also be eaten for dinner. One can therefore enjoy it as is or add jam for sweetness or add chopped onion and chili to the dough if you want your roti to be spicy.
 

APEC 2017: Vietnam makes constructive contribution to regional development

           
The central city of Da Nang in Vietnam has been upgraded to host the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders meeting on the 11th- 12th November 2017.

Infrastructure including roads, telecommunication and the international airport has been improved to host heads of some of the most influential economies in the world.

Speaking exclusively to The Diplomatic Society, H.E Vu Van Dzung, Ambassador of Vietnam to South Africa, explains the significance of a cooperation of 21 member economies of 2.8 billion people representing 57% of the world GDP and 47% of global trade. 

Q: This is the second time that Vietnam is hosting the APEC meeting, with the participation of many world leaders, please share your views on Vietnam’s role and confidence in the region and the world?

A: After more than 30 years of reform and extensive regional and international integration, Vietnam today is a highly open and dynamic economy, projected to become one of the ten fastest growing economies in the world.  Vietnam has implemented a proactive and active foreign policy in international integration; to be a friend, a reliable partner, and a responsible member of the international community, making a substantive and concrete contribution to the development of the region and the world for peace, stability and prosperity.
