Inspirational Maldivian Resort Manager

 Founded in 1979, Kaimoo Travels and Hotel Services Pvt Ltd is a leading tourism company in the Maldives. The name Kai-moo is derived from its founders Kandi Ahmed Ismail and Moomina Haleem. In Male’ Kaimoo Travels and Hotel Service Pvt Ltd has a chain of luxury star class hotels including, Mookai hotel, Kai Lodge and Kam hotel. Maldives has topped as having the best island resorts in the world. Today the Kaimoo has three star class resorts in the Maldives. The star class resorts such as Embudu Village Resort, Maldives, Equator Village Maldives and Summer Island Maldives are being recognized as among the best oldest resorts in the Maldives.
Summer Island Maldives is one of the country’s first resorts, and is owned by a Maldivian family. There are very few Maldivian female Resort Managers in the hospitality industry in the Maldives, but Mariya Shareef is one of them. She is the only woman to ever hold a Resort Manager’s post at Kaimoo Travels and Hotel Services Pvt Ltd Maldives. Shareef’s career spans 14 years in the hospitality, leisure sector in the country. Visiting the Summer Island Maldives, the Global Editor for the Diplomatic Society Srimal Fernando spoke exclusively to Mariya Shareef Resort Manager Summer Island Maldives.

PALESTINE
 The Embassy of the State of Palestine in cooperation with the Department of Arts and Culture, the United Nations Information Centre and, in partnership with The Department of International Relations and Cooperation hosted a Palestine – South Africa Cultural Week in Commemoration of the United Nations International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. The event took place from 28 of November 2016 – 2 of December 2016 and featured the following:
• A Palestinian Art Exhibition by prominent artists Mrs. Tamam Al-akhal and the late Mr. Ismail Shammout
• The screening of a Palestinian film titled ”5 Broken Cameras”, and
• Palestinian Music Concert by Al-Istiqlal dancing group and a Palestinian food festival

 The four Nordic Embassies in Pretoria (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden hosted a seminar on 8 December to highlight the 16 Days of Activism campaign to stop gender based violence.

The key note address was delivered by Dr Mathews Phosa Mathews, a South African attorney and politician and he was also an anti-apartheid activist. Dr Phosa outlined statistics on Gender Equality in the Nordics and South Africa. The economic gender gap in South Africa, he said, was reduced to levels last seen in 2008. The high unemployment level in South Africa is also a contributing factor. He said that gender attitudes should be addressed by schools, media, churches, in the workplace, and not only in December.
