China and South Africa working together
|
 Counsellor Mr. HU Zhangliang and Counsellor Ms. PAN Peng spokespersons of the Embassy of China in South Africa held a press conference in Pretoria to brief the media on The Year of China in South Africa. The event was officially launched on March 15, 2015 in Pretoria’s State Theatre with a concert which featured performances by, amongst others, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra and the University of Pretoria Youth Choir, as well as solo performances by Chinese singer Zeng Yong and South African Ntombee Ngcobo. South African Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa as well as China’s Minister of Culture, Luo Shugang, attended the opening. In his congratulatory message to President Zuma, which was read by Minister Luo Shugang, President Xi Jinping from the People’s Republic of China said in 2015 there would be a focus on China and South Africa working together closely and organising “activities in a wide range of areas, including economy and trade, culture, education, science and technology, tourism, etcetera”. “The events will showcase China’s development journey and its achievements as well as the fruitful results of China-South Africa cooperation,” Jinping said in the letter.
 Indian Opinion, a weekly newspaper, was first established and produced by Mahatma Gandhi and his colleagues in 1903 in the then Natal Province. The Indian Opinion focused on poor living conditions of indentured labourers, human rights and racial discrimination. It provides an important historical record of the social and political lives of the Indian community in South Africa. The paper included articles in four different languages: English, Hindi, Gujarati and Tamil. Indian Opinion was published at the printing press at the Phoenix Settlement. It was instrumental in the civil rights struggle and became a tool for political activism. Satyagraha, Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolent resistance, was encouraged. The final issue of this newspaper was produced in August 1961 after 58 years of existence. The National Library of South Africa (NLSA) has become central once again in presenting and preserving this important global heritage which has particular significance for India and South Africa.
 Revellers at the Carnival party were immersed in a feast for the eyes and ears and of course had their taste buds tantalized. The carnival took place in Pretoria and was hosted by the Latin American and Caribbean missions resident in South Africa.

 “The 4th African Film Week in Greece was held at the Greek Film Archives in Athens from 19-25 February 2015. Throughout the course of the event, a total of sixteen feature films and two short films were screened, from eight African countries. His Excellency, Mr. Sophonia Rapulane Makgetla, the Dean of the Africa Group and Ambassador the Republic of South Africa, officially inaugurated the 4th African Film Week stressing “the aim is for Greek audience to become familiar with the cultural experiences of each country and to get acquainted with today’s Africa, to recognize it for what it is and for what it can offer."
