Celebrating Reggae Month 2015
|
 On the occasion of Reggae Month, the Jamaican High Commission in Pretoria welcomes the opportunity to join Reggae fans in South Africa in celebrating the global impact of Reggae music, a genre that originated in Jamaica and evolved out of the country’s social history. The birthdays of two of Jamaica’s and Reggae Music’s late icons are also commemorated during the month of February. The late Dennis Brown also known as the ‘Crown Prince of Reggae’, is celebrated on 1 February. Importantly, this year, Reggae Month derives special significance from the fact that 6 February marks the 70th anniversary of the birth of Reggae’s best-known exponent, the late Robert Nesta Marley, affectionately called Bob Marley and popularly dubbed the “King of Reggae”.

Timor Leste hosts Asian HOM luncheon

 Ms Josefina Tilman, Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of Timor-Leste in Pretoria, hosted the first monthly Asian Heads of Mission Luncheon for this year (2015). The gathering serves as a platform to discuss, amongst others, development issues among the Asian group as well as matters relating to South Africa. President Obama's landmark visit to India

 US President Barack Obama concluded his three day trip to India on Tuesday, January 27, 2015. Obama’s arrival in New Delhi marked the first United States sitting President to visit India twice during his tenure at the White House. President Obama and the First Lady were greeted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi upon their arrival in New Delhi, India. US President Barack Obama concluded his three-day visit to India by addressing a selected gathering at Delhi's Siri Fort Auditorium. During his address at the Siri Fort auditorium Obama said, “I bring the friendship and greetings of the American people. On behalf of myself and Michelle, thank you so much for welcoming us back to India, 'bahut dhanyawad,” which drew massive cheer and applause from the audience.Photo: United States Embassy in New Delhi

Over the past five years the Embassy of Thailand in South Africa has sponsored several Muay Thai/Kick Boxers to experience the Thai Martial Arts in Thailand. The Launch of the Kasi Muay Thai Camp in Mamelodi, City of Tshwane in January is a clear indication that the efforts by the Embassy has led to a growing interest and participation in the sport.
At the launch Ambassador Viravakin of Thailand was pleased that South African youth were involved in a sport which is about self-discipline, health, fitness and self-defence. He described the sport as character building as it will also have a positive influence in other aspects of the youngsters lives. The Embassy donated gloves, mats, punching and kicking bags and other equipment. Member of the Mayoral Committee Nozipho Tyobeka Makeke for Sport and Recreation thanked the Embassy and the Thai government for their contribution.

Argentine Sovereignty over Malvinas (Falklands)

 "It has become a political issue,” explained Ambassador Carlos Sersale di Cerisano, Ambassador of the Argentine Republic to South Africa. He was speaking at a screening of the documentary ‘History of an Usurpation’ on the issue of the Malvinas Islands. At various times, the islands have had French, British, Spanish, and Argentine settlements until Britain reasserted its rule in 1833, although Argentina maintains its claim to the islands. United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2065(XX), adopted on December 16, 1965, recognized the existence of a sovereignty dispute between the United Kingdom and Argentina. The resolution invites the parties to find a peaceful solution to the problem bearing in mind the provisions of resolution 1514(XV) where the goal of eliminating all forms of colonialism was established. The 30 minute documentary is an historic presentation of the islands which are about 500km off the coast of Argentina.
