The Asia and Middle East directorate of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) and High Commissions and Embassies from that region accredited to South Africa together with sponsors participated in a Golf Day to celebrate the 2 decades of freedom and democracy in South Africa.
Opening the tournament H.E Ambassador Francis Moloi, Chief Director of the Asia desk at DIRCO and an avid golfer, encouraged the 120 participants by referring to the milestone of 20 years of Freedom and Democracy in South Africa.
Overall winner of the tournament G. Du Preez took the top prize when Anoitnette Smit said yes to the marriage proposal he made to her when accepting his prize.
Dean of the Asia Group, High Commissioner Bernard Baker of Singapore, Dean of the Arab Group, Ambassador Hassen AL – Oqab of Kuwait and Deputy Director General Ambassador Anil Sooklal (DIRCO) acknowledged the relations and role of the countries of the region in their support for the liberation of South Africa with references to the Bandung Conference and the Non- Aligned Movement during the prize giving gala dinner at the Blue Valley Golf Course.
 
 

SERBIA AND THE FLOODING DEVASTATION
 
A ROAD TO RECOVERY: Assisting persons and reconstructing infrastructure and public utilities

The month of May put Serbia on a difficult road ahead as floods swept across the country, leaving a trail of devastation unseen for more than a century. With many civilians missing and many more displaced, Serbia is left with the unimaginable task of alleviating the devastating effects of the flooding disaster.
At present, the Serbian authorities are doing their utmost to counter the destructive consequences of the disaster and are sparing no effort in accommodating and caring for the thousands of people who were rendered homeless as a result of the disaster. The government’s priority will be the clean-up of the damage on road infrastructure, as well as construction of new housing units for citizens whose houses were completely destroyed in the floods. The most difficult task ahead lies in reconstructing the infrastructure and public utilities in the flood-hit areas and rehabilitating the devastated Serbian economy.

Germany Commits R5,89 billion for Development Cooperation to South Africa
 
 
German Ambassador to South Dr. Horst Freitag and South African Minister of Finance, Mr. Nhlanhla Nene signed five agreements to the amount of 414.26 Million Euro (approximately R5,89 Billion) for Development Cooperation between South Africa and Germany.
Development cooperation between the Government of South Africa and the Federal Republic of Germany dates back to 1992. To date, the financial and technical contribution from the Government of Germany to South Africa is just over R14.4 billion, which includes the allocation from the last round of government to government negotiations held in 2012. This amount has gone towards empowering people, transfer of skills and building of institutional capabilities.
The relationship between the two partners is based on support and solidarity. Over the last 20 years, bilateral cooperation has matured into a partnership, where Germany supports South African priorities. The partnership is focused on the areas of Energy and Climate Change, HIV/AIDS Prevention and Good Governance which includes violence prevention and trilateral cooperation.

 
 

A dynamic Visegrad Group for Europe and the world
 
The Visegrad Group (V4) is an informal grouping of four central European countries – the Slovak Republic, the Czech Republic, the Republic of Hungary and the Republic of Poland. It is a living and informal regional structure composed of four Member States of the EU and NATO that adhere to shared values and have a common history, culture and geographical situation.
The V4 is a dynamic regional grouping of EU Member States, representing a platform for strengthening the coordination and consultation mechanism with a view to reaching common positions and opinions on topical issues of foreign and European policy, regional development, and economic and cultural cooperation.
 
 

Escort Task Group of the Chinese Navy visits Cape Town
 
Three vessels comprising the 16th Escort Task Group of the Chinese Navy arrived in the Port of Cape Town on Tuesday morning 17 June 2014 on their last lag of a visit to eight African countries.
The ships making up the 16th Escort Task Group (ETG) consisted of the modern Type 054A missile frigate FFG-546 Yancheng, the Type 053H3 missile frigate FFG-527 Luoyang and the new Type 903 replenishment ship AOE-889 Taihu.The Escort Task Group is visiting South Africa at the invitation of the South African Navy. Chinese Ambassador to South Africa, H.E. Mr. Tian Xuejun and Rear-Admiral Higgs, Chief of Naval Staff at the SA Navy welcomed the Commanding Officer of the Escort Task Group, Senior Captain Li Pengcheng (Deputy Chief of Staff of the North Sea Fleet of PLA Navy).
