Comparing Intangible Cultures
|
 This year’s Tam-Awan (Heritage) International Arts Festival whose theme was “Cordillera Stories-Rituals and Beliefs” was held in Baguio on 7-11 May 2014 at the Tam-Awan Village in Baguio City, Philippines. This theme was a continuation of last year’s focus which was on jewelry (tangible culture) wherein Ambassador Agnes Nyamande-Pitso showcased jewelry of different indigenous nationalities in South Africa. This year, Ambassador Nyamande-Pitso gave a talk on the rituals and beliefs (intangible) of South Africa’s indigenous people, comparing and contrasting it with that of the Philippines.

2003 Literature Nobel Prize winner JM Coetzee visits Uruguay

JM Coetzee’s arrival to Montevideo created a large expectation amongst literature lovers. Written and digital media widely announced his visit and conference, “The Idea of a Personal Library”, which took place on 5th May. The hall within the Solís Theatre complex originally intended for the conference had to be changed due to the overwhelming turnout and the Theatre had to be made available. Before Mr Coetzee delivered his lecture, he was declared a “Distinguished Visitor of the City of Montevideo” by Mayor Ana Olivera and was decoratedwith the “Delmira Agustini Medal”, the highest distinction awarded by the Uruguayan Government.
