 South Africa’s Arts and Culture Minister, Mr Paul Mashatile, and the British High Commissioner to South Africa, Ms Judith MacGregor, on behalf of the British Council, launched the SA-UK Seasons 2014 & 2015, a collaboration that will see the two countries engage, for the next two years, in creative programmes as a channel to further strengthen cultural relations between these two nations.
“We launch the SA-UK Seasons 2014 & 2015 as part of our ongoing commitment to open up new markets, facilitate skills transfer and create sustainable livelihoods for all those within the South African arts, culture and heritage sector. South Africa and the United Kingdom have strong bilateral relations, a shared language, similar legal and financial systems and common values. SA and the UK are also long-standing trade partners and have vibrant tourism industries. The Seasons, through showcasing our rich arts and culture, will no doubt enhance our well-established relations,” says Minister Mashatile.
The Seasons takes on greater significance as 2014 marks South Africa’s 20th anniversary of freedom and democracy.

Stability in the South Caucasus: South Africa-Azerbaijan Relations

Professor Maxi Schoeman, Head of the Department of Political Sciences at UP and Ambassador Elkhan Polukhov of Azerbaijan
The occupation of the Azerbaijan territory of Nagorno Karabakh by Armenia was the main focus of the lecture presented by Ambassador Elkhan Polukhov of Azerbaijan to SA, to the Department of Humanities at the University of Pretoria. He pointed to the double standards practised by certain powers in the international community when challenged on the issue of occupied territories.
Polukhov’s presentation explains in detail the territorial conflict with a timeline and historic facts about the emerging region of the South Caucasus which is made up of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia. These countries became independent after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

In recent years the South Asian island nation, the Maldives, has made significant strides in diplomacy. The Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the fourteen diplomatic missions around the world spearhead the country’s regional and global foreign Policy.
