Could it be said again, one day, never and never again will a special human being of Mr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela's stature walk this planet? Straddling two millennia he became a global icon displaying a rare humanity that embraced every strata of society. Should it not be our fervent hope that no-one will have to fill his shoes and walk his path again? If his lesson of peace and reconciliation was embedded in every human being then the world will no longer need heroes of his ilk. Â
It was just more than three years of Mr Mandela’s tenure as the first democratically elected President of South Africa in 1997, when the print version of Foreign Exchange was launched. It was the first monthly publication that reported specifically on events of the diplomatic missions based in South Africa. Aligned to Mr Mandela’s vision for global dialogue and peace Foreign Exchange was a platform for diplomatic exchanges in South Africa.
In his actions, Mr Mandela was a consummate diplomat. He sought to bring people together. He went so far as to meet with his so-called enemies – proponents of the reviled apartheid system. He was gracious to democrat and dictator alike. Time and time again his admirers and adversaries declared how he saw humanity in others.
Candid about his own shortcomings and vulnerability, Mr Mandela imbued a rare leadership which leaders the world-over could do well to emulate. How much of the strife that constantly plagues the world could be alleviated if his example was followed?
We pay tribute to a hero, whose contribution to freedom in South Africa allowed the birth our publication, now rebranded as The Diplomatic Society. It is due to the presence of a democratic state that the publication is enjoyed all over the world both as a print and online medium. In honouring his legacy, The Diplomatic Society will continue to highlight the role that diplomacy can play in building global peace and partnerships so that each citizen of the world can respect others and feel respected; and enjoy the benefit of honest economic development.

Venezuela inaugurates Embassy
Ambassador of Venezuela in South Africa Mairin Josefina Moreno-Merida and Ambassador Andries Venter of DIRCO pictured opening the Embassy. A Photographic Exhibition “Hugo Chavez: Precursor of the Multipolar World" was on diplay at the inauguration of the new embassy premises.

Spreading the festive cheer - Trinidad and Tobago
  The High Commission of Trinidad and Tobago in South Africa distributed food hampers, toys and books to learners at the Tsaroga Phoka Primary School in Soshanguve, Pretoria. The gift hampers in time for Christmas was most welcome especially after a severe hailstorm damaged roofs and windows of many buildings in the area.
High Commissioner Harry Partap his wife Nazra Partap and his team from the High Commission in Pretoria distributed the gifts to 350 learners from Grade R to Grade 2 and the entire school of 750 learners received ice lollies. Â
