For a Black South African woman of Indian origin, it is impossible to understand South Africa outside of its political and historical context. When Apartheid was formally instituted in 1948, South African identities were defined primarily in terms of race. South Africans were categorized as either Black or White. We were favored or discriminated against on the basis of our colour. What then constitutes being a South African today?

SA at VTN Fair in Uruguay

Once again the South African Embassy in Montevideo participated in the Expo VTN Fair, the most important tourism event in Uruguay, organized by the Uruguayan Association of Travel Agents. 
This year, the event took place at the Hipódromo de Maroñas (Maroñas Racecourse Building) which was inaugurated in 1889 and has recently been declared a national monument.  The lobby of this majestic building hosted the stands of the Fair which gave it a special atmosphere.
