Developing a New Generation of Researchers in SA and Japan

Dr. Phil Mjwara, Director General, Department of Science and Technology South Africa (DST) and Mr. Toshiyuki Nakamura, Resident representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency agreed that developing the next generation of researchers both in Japan and South Africa was the key outcome of the bilateral cooperation on science and technology between the two countries.
The three-year technical cooperation project entitled “Prediction of Climate Variations and its Application in the Southern African Region” stems from a partnership between JICA and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) referred to as the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS).
The Project focuses on the predictability of the Southern African climate on seasonal-to-interannual time scales to provide timely and skilful operational forecast outputs. Read More
British and SA National Libraries collaborate

A renewal of a Memorandum of Understanding between the National Library of South Africa, Pretoria and the British Library Board, London was concluded on 18 February 2013 in Pretoria during the visit of Baroness Tessa Blackstone, Chair of the British Library Board during her visit to South Africa.
Among the areas identified for collaboration were the facilitation of the participation of experts of their respective institutions in meetings, training courses, workshops, seminars, exhibitions, events, and conferences taking place in the respective institutions, in various fields of mutual interest and the exchange of experience with specialists in the area of digitization, e-publications, preservation, conservation, cataloguing, technical information and public services. Remembering the Bengali Language Martyrs Day

Each year at the early hours of the 21st day of February thousands of people queue at the iconic sculpture of Shaheed Minar or the martyr’s monument constructed near Dhaka Medical College to pay tribute to the slain martyrs of the Bengali language movement.
Many people bring red and yellow flowers and spread it out in front of the martyr’s monument. In Bangladesh, it is a National Day of Mourning. This five framed Shaheed Minar monument is raised fourteen feet above the ground and consists of four standing marble frames and a large double marble frame with a slanted top. The four frames at the Shaheed Minar monument were built to bear in mind the slain students who sacrificed their lives for the cause of making Bengali an official language. Read More
Chinese Foreign Minister in South Africa
South African International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane hosted Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in South Africa. The Minister's visit seeks to enhance the already sound bilateral relations between the two countries and to exchange views on the status of preparations for the Fifth BRICS Summit.
