After two and a half decades environmental awareness has become a sharp focus in this country landscaped by hills and abundant natural beauty.

Minister for Environment, Republic of Rwanda, Dr Vincent Biruta participated in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in South Africa recently. The IUCN is an organization that informs policy discourse on matters such as conservation of ecosystems and species.

Rwanda, a landlocked country neighboured by the four other African countries, Uganda to the North, DRC to the West, Tanzania to the East and Burundi to the South has mainstreamed conservation as key to sustainability.

Sustaining soil and preventing erosion has been mitigated through terracing and agroforestry which also prevents landslides.

Water management as a precious resource, greening through planting trees and grass, promoting clean energy solutions to reduce carbon emissions are being implemented. Rule and regulations to reduce pollution and litter is also part of the strategy.

The creation of the Rwanda Environmental Management Authority is at the centre of  social mobilisation and education with expertise at all levels including eco-tourism. The Authority which has prosecuting powers has embarked on a innovative project of turning former poachers into park rangers.
