Rural youth skills development - NARYSEC

The South African Embassy in Caracas, Venezuela, hosted 22 Youth from South Africa, during the month of June, 2013. The Youth are all part of the NARYSEC (National Rural Youth Service Corps)  programme, of the Ministry of Rural Development and Land Reform of South Africa. The NARYSEC programme was established in September 2010, with the main objective of recruiting and equipping rural youth with skills sufficient to enable them to perform community service in their own communities.  As such,the NARYSEC’s specific key objectives are:
?    To recruit unemployed youth in rural areas
?    To train the appointed youth through Further Education and Training programmes linked to the identified developmental community projects in rural areas
?    To develop youth with multi-disciplinary skills through civic education
?    To increase the number of rural communities receiving support in their self-development through the CRDP
The NARYSEC is rural wards-focused, and as such, its recruitment target is four youths per rural ward. One in four has to be a young person with disability, thus ensuring that the programme takes the needs of disabled youth into account. Considering that South Africa consists of 2 920 rural wards, this process will lead to the employment of more than 10 000 youths. The NARYSEC recruitment process insists on 50/50 gender balance per rural ward.

The South African Embassy in Venezuela, has been working with the Ministry of Rural Development and Land Reform, in creating a partnership with the NARYSEC youth and the Youth of Venezuela, in establishing programmes that will benefit the youth of both countries. The Venezuelan youth will be visiting South Africa at a later stage.
