The Sri Lankan High Commission in Pretoria marked the 77th anniversary of Sri Lanka’s independence with a celebration attended by members of the Sri Lankan diaspora from across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region as well as friends of Sri Lanka. The event, hosted by Acting High Commissioner Suminda Mendis, reflected on the nation's history, recent transformations, and future aspirations.

The ceremony commenced with interfaith prayers led by representatives of the Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and Islamic communities, emphasizing the nation's cultural and religious diversity. The symbolic lighting of the traditional oil lamps was carried out by young attendees, underscoring the role of the next generation in shaping Sri Lanka’s future.

In his address, Acting High Commissioner Mendis highlighted the government’s commitment to inclusive development. The new government has embarked on a people-centered approach, ensuring that every citizen benefits from economic growth and social progress.

During the celebration, the mission staff read out messages from the Sri Lankan President, Prime Minister, and Foreign Minister. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s message reflected on the nation’s resilience: “Today, as we celebrate the 77th National Independence Day, we do so with the hopes and aspirations of a new kind of freedom. Reflecting on Sri Lanka’s history, we have now embarked on a new path, with a government built through collective efforts of the people from the North, East, West, and South. At this moment, we stand together to take on the challenge of rebuilding a thriving nation – a beautiful life; something that was lost and eluded us over the past century.”

Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya echoed similar sentiments: “A thriving nation, a beautiful life is not just a vision; it is a call to action. It is a commitment to Sri Lanka where democracy is deepened, where economic justice is prioritised, and where the voices of the marginalised are not just heard but centred in decision-making. It is a promise to build a country where every individual feels a sense of belonging and worth.”

Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath emphasized diplomatic engagement recognising that Sri Lanka's future is interconnected with the world. Strengthening international relations, fostering trade, and promoting the nation’s rich heritage are at the heart of Sri Lanka’s foreign policy.

Among the key policies introduced by the government is the Clean Sri Lanka initiative, an all-encompassing strategy aimed at a cleaner physical environment and a nationwide moral commitment to enhance ethical principles.

Mendis elaborated on its significance saying that Clean Sri Lanka is not just about cleanliness; it is about creating a country that is livable, green, and forward-thinking. From reducing plastic waste to improving water resources and promoting responsible tourism, this initiative will shape a healthier future for all Sri Lankans.

The policy has already led to improved waste management in Colombo and other major cities, as well as increased investment in renewable energy. Experts believe that Clean Sri Lanka will enhance public health, attract foreign investment, and boost the tourism sector.

Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, gained independence from British rule on 4 February 1948. Over the decades, the island nation has experienced economic growth, political changes, and a long civil conflict that ended in 2009. In recent years, Sri Lanka has faced economic challenges, but recent reforms have set the country on a path of recovery.

The government’s focus on economic stability, digital transformation, and sustainable development is seen as a turning point. The tourism sector, which suffered setbacks due to the pandemic and economic crisis, is now showing strong signs of recovery.

With its stunning beaches, ancient cultural sites, and diverse wildlife, Sri Lanka remains one of Asia’s most promising tourist destinations. The Clean Sri Lanka policy aims to enhance eco-tourism and sustainable travel, ensuring that visitors experience the country’s natural beauty while supporting conservation efforts.

The world is rediscovering Sri Lanka. From the pristine shores of Mirissa to the historical marvels of Sigiriya, travellers are invited to explore the island with renewed confidence.

As Sri Lankans in South Africa celebrated their homeland’s independence, the event served as a reminder of the nation’s resilience and potential. With new policies in place and a commitment to progress, Sri Lanka is poised for a brighter future—both for its people and for those who visit its shores.
