The 8th China-Africa Youth Festival was a precious opportunity to not only learn about Chinese culture but also to explore the rich tapestry of cultures of different African countries. Participants had the chance to talk to young leaders from across the continent, fostering new bonds and connections that can potentially benefit everyone involved in the future. This cultural exchange not only broadened our understanding but also paved the way for collaboration and enduring friendships that could be good for personal development.

During our insightful visit to China, I enjoyed learning about the rich history, culture, and development of this fascinating country. The exhibits we looked at the Museum of the Communist Party of China (CPC) showed pivotal moments and figures of Chinese history, offering a comprehensive narrative of the country’s socio-political transformation.

It is impressive how meticulously China has preserved its history, and I believe this has a profound effect on inculcating patriotism among the youth. This is something I feel could be effectively replicated in Kenya to foster a similar sense of national pride.

History lessons

The museum’s artifacts, multimedia presentations, and interactive displays vividly illustrated the CPC’s role in shaping modern China. These exhibits demonstrated the Party’s ideological foundations and its enduring impact on the Chinese society.

One of the highlights for me was the 3D exhibit depicting the Long March led by Chairman Mao Zedong. The level of detail and the immersive experience were truly captivating. Additionally, the 5D ride that showcased different cities and provinces across China, along with the innovative technologies developed and implemented for the benefit of the people, was astonishing. It underscored China’s advancements and contributions to the world at large.

The displays of weaponry and vehicles from the early 1900s, along with portrayals of the Party leaders, was also eye-catching. They provided a tangible connection to the past, allowing us to appreciate the struggles and triumphs that have shaped the nation’s modern identity.

A visit to the Great Wall of China was another unforgettable experience. Seeing this monumental structure in person helped me truly understand why it is one of the wonders of the world. The sheer scale of the Wall, stretching over 26,000 km, is hard to fathom. Climbing the Wall was physically demanding, but the breathtaking view from the top made all the effort worthwhile. It was a humbling experience to stand on a structure that has stood for centuries and played such a significant role in Chinese history.

This visit not only deepened my knowledge of China’s past but also offered a nuanced perspective on its present and future trajectory. It was an enlightening journey through time, showcasing how China’s rich cultural heritage and historical milestones have shaped its current global standing. The innovative displays and engaging narratives made the history come alive, and the experiences left a lasting impression on me.

Bright future

Another highlight of our visit was a trip to Hengdian World Studios, often referred to as the “Chinese Hollywood.” This studio complex is one of the largest film and television production sites in the world. We were lucky to see the shooting for a scene, which gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the filmmaking process. The interactive 5D ride at Hengdian Studios was mind-blowing, providing a dynamic and immersive experience that brought scenes from popular movies to life.

A visit to Leapmotor, an electric vehicle (EV) company, gave a glimpse of China’s green energy future. The factory produces an impressive 800 cars per hour, which demonstrates the country’s strength in this sector, and its commitment to sustainable transportation and reducing carbon emissions. The shift towards green energy is not only transforming the automotive industry but also contributing to cleaner air and a healthier environment.

The youth festival fostered a deeper understanding of how cultural exchanges can serve as bridges between nations, promoting peace, understanding, and cooperation. By engaging with peers from different cultural backgrounds, we were able to exchange ideas and perspectives, learning from each other’s experiences and challenges. This has reinforced my belief in the importance of such exchanges in fostering a more inclusive and harmonious global community.

The festival also highlighted the role of youth in driving change and innovation. Witnessing the dynamism and creativity of young leaders from both China and Africa was truly inspiring. It was evident that the youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow but are also making significant contributions today, and shaping the future. This realisation has motivated me to become more actively involved in initiatives that promote cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration.

Moreover, the technological advancements we observed in China have provided valuable insights into how technology can be leveraged to address some of the pressing issues facing our societies. From smart cities to advancements in healthcare and education, China’s progress in these areas offers lessons that can be adapted and implemented in Africa to drive development and improve quality of life.

The cultural performances and artistic expressions we witnessed were another highlight of the festival. They provided a window into the rich and diverse traditions of both China and Africa. These performances were not just entertaining but also served as a reminder of the importance of preserving and promoting cultural heritage. They demonstrated how art and culture can be powerful tools for education and social change, fostering mutual respect and understanding.

I am filled with a sense of hope and optimism for the future of China-Africa relations. The friendship and connections we made during this festival are just the beginning. They have laid the foundation for ongoing collaboration and partnership. By continuing to engage in such exchanges, we can build a future where our countries work together to tackle common challenges and seize shared opportunities.

In short, the 8th China-Africa Youth Festival was more than just a cultural exchange; it was a transformative experience that has left an indelible mark on all who participated. It has strengthened our resolve to work towards a future characterised by mutual respect, understanding, and collaboration. The lessons learnt and the experiences shared during this festival will undoubtedly shape our approaches to leadership and development in the years to come. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this journey and look forward to future exchanges that continue to bridge gaps and build a more connected and cohesive world.

I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the staff, volunteers, videographers, and bus drivers for being so courteous and accommodating to all of us. Their kindness and professionalism truly stood out, making us feel at ease throughout our entire stay. From the very first moment we landed to the final farewell, we were made to feel exceptionally welcomed, and for that, I am profoundly grateful.
