On Friday, 27th July 2012 a historic meeting took place between the strategic planning teams of the Rustenburg Local Municipality and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia at the Mayor's Office in Rustenburg, North West Province, South Africa.

The agenda of the meeting was to review the MOU to be signed between the Rustenburg Local Municipality and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in South Africa, as well as make preparations for the municipal delegation to go to Indonesia to sign a Twin Sister City Agreement with the City of Samarinda, the Capital of East Kalimantan (Borneo).

Rustenburg is world renowned as the location of most of the world's platinum and has the largest untapped reserves.

South Africa produced 73% of the world’s platinum production in 2011 according to Citibank who calculated that South Africa’s deposits comprise of 88% of world’s total in 2010. So too is East Kalimantan, the leading mining province in Indonesia.

The significance of the event is twofold. Firstly, the signing of the MOU between the municipality and the Embassy will mark a new era in international intergovernmental relations and secondly, the cooperation between Rustenburg and Samarinda will partner two international giants in the mining industry.
