Every year young photojournalists around the globe have the opportunity to uncover their potential and showcase their skill by entering the Stenin International Press Photo Contest. The Contest was started by Rossiya Segodnya news agency in 2014 in honour of Andrei Stenin, a Russian photographer who was killed covering the civil war in Ukraine.

After the winners are announced in Moscow the images are sent on a world tour and this year the Embassy of Russia in Pretoria, South Africa hosted the opening of the exhibition on 23 November. The exhibition runs till 15 December at Apogee Boutique Hotel and Spa.

Ambassador Ilya Rogachev said, “This Contest also allows us, its viewers, to see our world through the lens of a photojournalist’s camera. As Andrei Stenin himself said, ‘Journalists are the eyes of the citizens and the world’.”

“One of the main objectives for our contest is to support young photo reporters at the early stages in their careers and enable them to engage with top-notch photography experts who sit on the contest jury, as well as with audiences around the world,” said Oksana Oleinik, Contest Curator in a statement.

Oleinik said that in 2021, the contest received more than 4,500 entries from 70 countries. “The works at this exhibition tell poignant vivid stories in images. I strongly believe that our winners are excellent professionals who have mastered the art of photography, think outside the box, and are bold in their undertakings.”

Submissions for the 2022 edition will open on 22 December, on Andre Stenin’s birthday.
