Sweden continues to hold the second-place spot in the global ranking of the world's most innovative countries, the Global Innovation Index, a ranking Sweden has held since 2019.

“It is the incredibly strong innovation environment in Sweden that we now connect with South Africa in our joint projects such as Cape Town/Stockholm Connect and the South Africa Sweden University Forum," says Sweden’s Ambassador to South Africa Mr Håkan Juholt.

The global ranking has been published every year since 2007. In the survey, WIPO looks at 132 countries' innovation opportunities based on 80 indicators.

This year's survey looked particularly at how the countries' innovation systems and innovation capacity functioned during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Nordic country is preceded by Switzerland, who retains the top position in the ranking presented in a report by the UN intellectual property organization WIPO.

"The explanation for our high-ranking year after year is the ability to collaborate between business, academia, civil society and the public sector in order to gather strength and find solutions to our societal challenges," says Ambassador Juholt.

Cape Town/Stockholm Connect is an initiative by the Silicon Cape in partnership with Wesgro, the City of Cape Town, Invest Cape Town, The Loudhailer, Business Sweden and the Embassy of Sweden. The platform brings together companies, developers, customers, investors, entrepreneurs and institutions from across Cape Town and Stockholm via a series of activities to strengthen collaboration in the tech sector.

South Africa Sweden University Forum (SASUF) is a strategic internationalisation project with the overall aim of strengthening ties between Sweden and South Africa in research, education and innovation. SASUF is a collaboration between 38 universities in Sweden and South Africa together with embassies, civil society organisations, funding agencies and ministries in both countries.
