Mandela Day in Greece

On 17 July 2015 the South African Embassy in Athens joined by Aspen Greece devoted Nelson Mandela Day to the Athenian Old Age Home in order to offer companionship and joy to the elderly who long for the valuable gift of human contact.
The charitable association "Athenian Old Age Home" was founded in 1864 and has since continuously provided its services in accordance with its founding charter to every distressed, particularly elderly, person.
The Mandela Day delegation after offering biscuits, tea, soft drinks to the elderly, sat by their side, heard their sometimes gibberish –sometimes logical - words, complaints that came through their shaky voice and patiently heard their stories. The elderly sang accompanied by the piano, whereas, the Mandela Girls danced South African traditional dances.
As the evening came to an end Mr Dawid du Plessis, Charge d ’Affairs a. i handed over a plaque to Mr Kerameidas, Director of the Old Age Home as a reminder of “International Nelson Mandela Day 2015”.
The Director of the Old Age Home thanked the South African Embassy and Aspen Greece for offering the precious gift of warmth and companionship to people that have so much need for human contact. Moreover, he gave thanks for the donation of essentials offered to the elderly.
