Gold Cup for South Africa at “Punta Sevens” 25th Annual International Rugby Tournament in Uruguay
SA Sevens Academy celebrating their win
The idea of this Punta Sevens Tournament came about 25 years ago when members of the Old Boys Club realized that most rugby players were in Punta del Este for their summer holidays and it would be an ideal time to have some sport and fun, and at the same time entertain other holidaymakers. This tournament, organized by the Old Boys Club, is financed by means of sponsorships. Since the early stages, the tournament has received the full support of the Uruguayan Rugby Union.
This year the Old Boys’ Club of Montevideo celebrated the 25th Annual International Rugby Tournament “Punta Sevens” in Punta del Este. SA Sevens Academy team was once again invited to participate in this tournament and was the first team to arrive at this world famous seaside resort Punta del Este.
A total of 21 leading teams from Chile, Argentina, Brazil, South Africa and Uruguay participated this year.
Rosco Speckman, who was top try-scorer of the tournament, was named Player of the Tournament
The best match of the tournament was the final on Saturday evening between SA Sevens Academy and Moby Dick (Argentinian team formed by top players), where SA Sevens Academy beat Moby Dick by 19-14.
