EXPO VTN (TRIPS, TOURISM AND NATIONS INTERNATIONAL FAIR) (19-21 September) - MONTEVIDEO

Once again the South African Embassy in Montevideo participated in the Expo VTN Fair, the most important tourism event in Uruguay, organized by the Uruguayan Association of Travel Agents.

This year, the event took place at the Hipódromo de Maroñas (Maroñas Racecourse Building) which was inaugurated in 1889 and has recently been declared a national monument.  The lobby of this majestic building hosted the stands of the Fair which gave it a special atmosphere.

Various countries were represented, amongst other, Brazil, Perú, Dominican Republic, Argentina, Ecuador, Cuba, each offering their main tourism attractions.  A tango show was performed during the inauguration, attended by authorities and members of the Diplomatic Corps, after which, typical Cuban finger-food was served.

During the course of the day there were workshops as well as different activities, such as food tasting and various live shows which included regional dancers wearing typical attires, attracting visitors and creating even more expectation.  As is the case with most Tourism Exhibitions, one day was open only to tour operators, travel agents and tourism students, which enabled a good interaction with the stakeholders and gave the Mission a good opportunity to strongly promote South Africa as a tourism destination.

The South African stand was decorated very colourfully with banners depicting different fields of interest (wines, flowers, leisure, wildlife, people, etc.) which attracted the visitors and made it one of the most visited stands of the Fair.  Plenty of information material was provided to the visitors, who were also encouraged to approach the Mission for additional information and/or tourism material.

The South African stand received from the organizers a book on Uruguay, as a souvenir and a token of appreciation.
