ASEAN supports Mercy House

On August 19, 2013, Ambassador Sabaruddin of Indonesia as Chairman of the ASEAN Pretoria Committee (APC) awarded funding to Mercy House, an orphanage that houses people who are victims of human trafficking and domestic violence.
The handover ceremony was attended by Ambassadors from ASEAN countries based in Pretoria.
Ambassador Sabaruddin expressed the appreciation of APC to Mercy House who provides assistance to victims of human trafficking and domestic violence, including ASEAN nationals residing in the Republic of South Africa.
It was mentioned that ASEAN has taken steps to intensify efforts to combat the human trafficking problem that threatens the stability and prosperity of the region.
On May 18, 2011 at the ASEAN summit in Indonesia, the ASEAN Heads of State agreed to strengthen regional and international cooperation to prevent and combat trafficking in persons and to enhance cooperation within the framework of existing instruments.
As an expression of appreciation for the services of Mercy House, the APC contributed funds obtained from the ASEAN Charity Bazaar in 2012 to support the activities of the Mercy House in the future. (Source: Embassy of Indonesia)
