Freedom Day in celebrated Montevideo, Uruguay

On 27 April, Freedom Day is celebrated in South Africa commemorating the first democratic and universal elections, which gave African citizens the right to vote and represents the end of apartheid.

Nelson Mandela was elected as the first African President of the country and assumed duties on 10 May 1994.

The South African Embassy in Uruguay celebrated the National Day by offering a reception at the Cottage Hotel, attended by friends and members of the Diplomatic Corps.

The Uruguayan and South African flags flanked the entrance where Ms Ellen Hajie, Head of Mission; Mrs Sonica van Rooyen, Defence Attaché; and Mr Aaron Kondowe-Themba, First Secretary, welcomed each and every guest who arrived to celebrate one of the historic milestones of the 20th Century.
