Freedom Day in celebrated Canberra, Australia
South African High Commissioner Ms K A Mqulwana
The South African Mission in Canberra celebrated the 2013 Freedom Day celebrations on 29 April in the splendid green gardens of South Africa House with approximately 400 invited guests. It was a profoundly well organised event and the program both formal and formal-informal was executed with unparalleled diplomatic precision.
The event took special significance, both as an opportunity to market the country as well as the content of key messages delivered.
The audience were informed of the strides made thus far despite the vexing vestiges of our recent past in entrenching human rights and fundamental freedoms for all i.e. the continuous roll out of basic services such as electricity, water, housing, social security, education and health.
The warm and cordial bilateral relation between South Africa-Australia was lauded. Cooperation in different areas including at multilateral forums was affirmed.
The guests were treated to a typically South African cuisine while enjoying classical South African sounds and were promised a much more prestigious event next year as we celebrate 20 years of democracy and freedom.
