Presidential elections in Senegal – Statement by Alain Juppé on March 26, 2012

France congratulates Mr. Macky Sall on his election as President of Senegal.

The second round of voting took place in an atmosphere of calm and serenity, reflecting the vey strong democratic vitality of Senegal, which serves as an example for the whole of Africa.

France commends the dignified attitude of President Wade, who congratulated his opponent yesterday evening.

The new Senegalese Head of State, Mr. Macky Sall, will be able to count on the support of France, which is determined to support Senegal, as it has always done, on the path toward progress, peace and development.

President Sarkozy sent a message of congratulations to Mr. Macky Sall and to President Wade. I will speak with him today as well as with Mr. Wade in order in turn to congratulate each of them for this major democratic success and to assure them of France’s friendship and support.
