Cuban Health Fair

22 October 2019

Cuban Cooperators of the Medical Brigade in South Africa, alongside members of the Cuban Embassy in the country, held a "Health Fair" in the rural community "Wallmansthal" in Gauteng South Africa on Saturday, October 19.

During this day, 9 Cuban doctors, with the assistance of South African nurses from the clinic of the community, provided free medical care for the prevention and detection of diseases like hypertension, diabetes, HIV, breast cancer, prostate cancer and larynx cancer, among others.

As a result, a total of 145 patients were treated and those who were diagnosed with diseases were referred to their corresponding area of care for future treatment.

This fair was based on the preventive nature of our Public Health System, with emphasis on the community work, which is one of the pillars that have allowed Cuba to show health indicators of developed countries today.

The members of the Cuban Embassy accompanied the doctors, interacted with members of the community and offered a typical Cuban soup to all present.

On this day of health promotion local authorities highlighted the humanism and solidarity of the Cuban medical cooperators and diplomats.

They also recalled the beginning of health cooperation between Cuba in South Africa in 1996, thanks to the agreements signed between the historic leaders of both countries, Fidel Castro and Nelson Mandela.

The Cuban international cooperation in the field of health, which emerged in 1963, has become a benchmark for solidarity and humanism at the international level and has obtained more than 12 international awards such as: the 1998 "Gold Medal of Health for All" by the World Health Organization (WHO), the 2009 “Gold Medal” of the General Assembly of the United Nations, for “making Cuba a paradigm of Solidarity” and the 2017 WHO “LEE Jong-wook” award earned by the Cuban Medical Brigade Henry Reeves, in recognition for its emergency assistance provided to more than 3.5 million people in 21 countries affected by disasters and epidemics.
