The 60th Anniversary of the Cuban Revolution commemorated in Ethiopia

The Cuban Embassy in Ethiopia hosted in Addis Ababa, a reception to commemorate the 60 Anniversary of the triumph of the Cuban Revolution that occurred on January 1st, 1959.

The reception was attended by high officials of the Ethiopian Government and parliament, the African Union, members of the diplomatic corp accredited to Addis Ababa and representatives of various sectors of the Ethiopian civil society, as well as, Ethiopians graduated in Cuba, the Cuban community in Ethiopia and Cuban doctors and teachers who are rendering service to this east African country, as part of Government cooperation programs.

The Ambassador of Cuba to Ethiopia, H. E. Mrs. Vilma Thomas, took the opportunity to highlight the achievements of the Cuban Revolution during these 60 years, the challenges that lay ahead and the willingness of the Cuban people to continue developing their country in order to build a prosperous and sustainable society for the benefit of the whole population.

The Ambassador also underlined the historical solidarity between Cuba and Africa, forged from the trenches of the struggle against colonialism, racism and apartheid to the most genuine cooperation and acknowledged that the African continent has also been a solid bastion of support for Cuba in the fight against the blockade, which is recognized and deeply appreciated by the Cuban people.


On behalf of the Government of Ethiopia, H.E. Mr. Markos Tekle, State Minister of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the historical cooperation and friendship between Cuba and Ethiopia, the role played by Cuba to help Ethiopia 40 years ago to protect its sovereignty from foreign aggression and its contribution to the development of Ethiopia through cooperation in various sectors including the training of thousands of Ethiopian youngsters in Cuba, who are now serving their countries in different areas.

Representing the African Union Commission, its Deputy Chairperson, H.E. Mr. Thomas Kwesi Quartey also paid tribute to Cuba´s contribution to African´s independence and stressed that the Cubans only took with them, the mortal remains of their fallen soldiers. He also emphasized the contribution of Cuba to Africa´s development in the sectors of health, education, science and sports, among others, despite being a nation economically blocked by the United States for nearly 60 years.

During the commemoration tribute was also paid to Cuba´s National Hero José Martí, on its 166 anniversary to be celebrated on January 28th.
