Immunities and Privileges – ULEMASA meets WFTU

5 October 2018

In September 2018, at the 13th National Congress of COSATU (The Congress of South African Trade Unions) delegates of ULEMASA (The Union of Local Employees of Missions Accredited to South) met with delegates of WFTU (The World Federation of Trade Unions) in Midrand, South Africa (SA).

The challenges posed by the immunities and privileges that diplomats are entitled to in terms of the Vienna Convention were key to the discussions led by ULEMASA President Mr Sello Pelo and Mr George Mavrikos WFTU Secretary General.

Pelo explained that the union was formed to protect employees of foreign representative missions in SA. The aim is to promote fair and just working conditions for their members. The prevention and eradication of xenophobic behavior was another goal of the recently established union.

The meeting also confirmed ULEMASA’s affiliation to the WFTU which has over 96 million members in 126 countries. The Union’s interactions with South Africa’s International Relations Department were welcomed.
Furthermore WFTU will place ULAMSA’s request for advice and support on the agendas of its international conferences. Training, including that of financial management will be offered to the Union.
