Ambassadors for South Africa

17th August 2018
Chinese Embassy, Pretoria.

“This shall bring our two counties closer,” said the Chinese Ambassador to South Africa Lin Songtian at the sending off ceremony held in the Great hall at the Chinese Embassy in Pretoria on the 15th August, where a a group of 32 students and their friends and relatives had gathered.

All were excited to go to China and become ambassadors of South Africa and Africa; some were nervous, apprehensive at this new stage in their lives and education, others were very enthusiastic to be going back. Many had not been to China before and were happy to be going and learning in a new environment.

“You’re going to China at the right time” said Ambassador Lin, a qualified teacher himself. He explained the advantage and benefit of the mutual recognition of qualifications entered into by the two countries.

To date over 1500 South African students have completed schooling in China in a wide variety of courses, under and post graduate as well as Masters and Doctoral dissertations.

Mdingi Isasiphinkosi, 24, from Eastern Cape and Thabiso Phosholi 26 from Welkom, were both ecstatic to return and pursue their studies and possible business concepts they had found.

Students who had attended past courses spoke very highly of the opportunity to further their qualifications, meet friends from all over the world and learn Chinese as a third language.

The Inter-Governmental, People-to-People exchange that was signed last year between the two governments, a first for Africa, advanced the exchange of knowledge.

Each year China offers numerous opportunities through the Higher Educational Exchange to South African students,” said Wendy Adams Deputy Director: Department of Higher Education and Training. “The Chinese Government will cover the costs, tuition, and accommodation,” she said.
