After leaving the African Union in 1984, on 30 January 2017 the AU readmitted Morocco as a member state.  At the 31st African Union Summit, held in Nouakchott at the beginning of July, it was agreed to set up the African Observatory for Migration and Development (OAMD), which will be based in the Moroccan capital of Rabat.

The initiative, which was proposed by Morocco, will focus on “harmonizing the national strategies of African states and improving interaction with partners,” the Morocco’s Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, told a press conference in Nouakchott, the Mauritanian capital.
As part of the celebrations of the centenary of the birth of Nelson Mandela, a Moroccan initiative is underway to produce a documentary film about Mandela’s life in Morocco, said Mr Abdelkader NAJI.
