The Chinese Embassy holds Lighting Ceremony

13 February 2018

The Chinese Embassy in South Africa held a Lighting Ceremony at Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton, Johannesburg to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year and the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and South Africa. The event is themed “Lighting up the Spirit of Nelson Mandela, and Lighting up the Friendship and Cooperation between China and South Africa”. The Chinese Ambassador Mr. Lin Songtian and South African Tourism Minister Mme. Tokozile Xasa attended the event.

Ambassador Lin reviewed the great achievements of China-SA relations and expressed strong confidence for the bright prospect for future China-SA ties. Ambassador Lin particularly pointed out that, to establish diplomatic ties between China and South Africa is a major political decision made by President Nelson Mandela on the basis of the one China policy.

The political commitment made by President Nelson Mandela on behalf of the South African government and people has formed a solid foundation for the remarkable achievements of today’s China-SA relations. It is therefore most fitting and meaningful that the Chinese Embassy holds the event at the Nelson Mandela Square to celebrate the 20th anniversary of China-SA relations and to pay tribute to the memory of President Nelson Mandela.

South African Tourism Minister Xasa spoke highly of SA-China relations in her remarks, and expressed sincere welcome for more Chinese tourists to visit South Africa to support SA’s economic and social development. Minister Xasa also expressed festive greetings and best wishes to the Chinese people.

During the event, Ambassador Lin and Minister Xasa jointly lit 20 Chinese red lanterns, symbolizing the 20 years of diplomatic ties between China and South Africa. There were also programs of gift giving, Chinese and African art performance, and a photo exhibition.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of China-SA diplomatic ties and the centenary of President Nelson Mandela. Over the past two decades, through joint efforts, China-SA relations has achieved leapfrog development from partnership to strategic partnership and then to comprehensive strategic partnership.
