Solidarity with Palestine

The Honourable Dr. Nabeel Shaath, Advisor to the President of the State of Palestine on Foreign and International Relations, visited South Africa from the 27th – the 30th of November 2017. While in South Africa, Dr. Shaath met with South Africa’s President H.E. Jacob Zuma in Pretoria and presented him with a letter from H.E. President Abbas on Palestinian-South African relations and the latest developments in Palestine.

Dr. Shaath visited Luthuli House in Johannesburg where he met with Comrade Gwede Mantashe, the Secretary General of the ANC and other ANC officials. He also met with Arab Ambassadors and members of civil society organizations respectively.

Dr. Shaath also had the opportunity to give a key note address at a ceremony to commemorate the United Nations International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people observed each year on the 29th of November.

The ceremony was a joint collaboration between the Embassy of the State of Palestine, the Department of international Relations and Cooperation, the Department of Arts and Culture and the United Nations Information Centre, Pretoria. It was held at DIRCO in honour of Comrade Oliver Tambo under the title “The year of O.R. Tambo and the Palestinian Struggle under Occupation” seminar.

The programme of the event was directed by Ambassador Themba Rubushe, Chief Director for the Middle East in the Department of International Relations and Co-operation and included contributions by Mr. Masimba Taferenyika, Director of the United Nations Information Center in South Africa who delivered a speech by the UN Secretary General, remarks by Ambassador Hashem Dajani of the State of Palestine who extended appreciation to the South African government and people for their unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people. Ambassador Dajani’s remarks were followed by Dr. Shaath’s remarkable key note address.

The first session of the programme ended with a speech by South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Hon. Ms. Maite Nkoana-Mashabane which was delivered by Ambassador Ebrahim Saley, Chief Operations Officer: Department of International Relations and Cooperation.

Further addresses followed in the panel discussion – the second session of the event - by Ambassador Ammar Hijazi, Assistant Minister of Multilateral Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (“the crime of apartheid under international law and its applicability to the occupied Palestinian territory including East Jerusalem”);  Professor Garth Le Pere of the University of Pretoria (“colonialism in Africa in relation to Israeli oppression”);  and Judge Navi Pillay, former Commissioner on Human Rights, South Africa (“General statement about colonization, discrimination, and apartheid”)

The Panel discussion was led by Ms. Zeenat Abdool, National Information Officer at the United Nation Information Center, Pretoria.

The event was well attended by Heads of Missions and other members of the diplomatic Corps, as well as DIRCO officials, civil society organizations, academics, media, the Palestinian community and friends.
