The Order of the Polar Star (Swedish: Nordstjärneorden) is a Swedish order of chivalry created by King Frederick I on 23 February 1748, together with the Order of the Sword and the Order of the Seraphim.

The Order of the Polar Star was until 1975 intended as a reward for Swedish and foreign "civic merits, for devotion to duty, for science, literary, learned and useful works and for new and beneficial institutions", but is since then only awarded to members of the Royal family and Foreign Nationals.

In the 1960’s and early 1970’s H.E. Billy Modise was living in Sweden and was instrumental in raising awareness about apartheid in Sweden.

Billy Modise was the High Commissioner for South Africa to Canada in 1995, he was the Assistant Director of the United Nations Institute for Namibia between 1976 and 1988. He was also the Chief of Protocol at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation from 1999 until 2006.
