2nd Free Palestine Boxing Tournament

4 October 2017

The Embassy of the State of Palestine in cooperation with the Ahmed Kathrada foundation, BDS South Africa, the Johannesburg Boxing Organization and the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation organized the 2nd Free Palestine Boxing Tournament at Orlando Communal Hall in Soweto on Saturday, 16 September 2017. Various boxing clubs participated in the tournament.

The tournament took place in Soweto for the second year in a row because Soweto is a symbol of resistance to apartheid and a symbol of inspiration for the Palestinian people to continue their just struggle against the Israeli occupation for freedom and independence.

Prominent leaders of South Africa for example, late President Nelson Mandela, also trained as a young boxer in Soweto and late Ahmed Kathrada was an ardent supporter of the Palestinian struggle and understood the importance of the historical and current links between South Africans and Palestinians, but was no boxer. He did however, have an appreciation for sport and its ability to bring people together.
