Daesh defeated

Daesh, the extremist group that occupied the city of Mosul in Iraq has been defeated, said Ambassador Dr Saad Jawad Kindeel of Iraq to South Africa at a press conference held at the Embassy in Pretoria.

He briefed journalists on the situation after Iraqi ground forces recaptured the city of Mosul and surrounding areas from the extremist group after a 3 year battle. The challenge, he pointed out, is the 4 million internally displaced Iraqis and restoring a sense of normality.

He called for the support of the people of Mosul in their rebuilding efforts. There is need for infrastructure and utility development in the city and surrounding regions. Rehabilitation of the people affected by the extremism will also need urgent attention if a lasting peace and normalisation is to be achieved.

The defeat of this extremist group by Iraqi ground forces is seen as significant victory for Iraq as it paves the way ahead for forging unity amongst its multi ethnic and diverse population.

The liberation of Mosul, located on the banks of the Tigris River, will have an impact on the economy.  Known for its oil reserves, Mosul is also considered an educational centre, and being steeped in the ancient history of Assyrian civilization, is important for art, culture, travel and tourism.
