4 July 2017

In June a Vietnamese businesses delegation led by Mr. Ngo Khai Hoan, Deputy Direct for Africa- ministry of Trade and Industry participated in trade and business conferences in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Located in South Eastern Asia, Vietnam has a population of 95 million people. The initiation of economic reforms from the late 1980’s, the Doi Moi policy, set Vietnam onto the path of a socialist orientated market economy.

The 2016 economic indicators reported GDP at 600US$ billion, while economic growth stood at 6.1%. Spices, household goods, steel, agricultural products, resources and minerals were companies seeking trade and investment opportunities.

This and other exchanges, including the visit of Deputy President Ramaphosa of SA to Vietnam last year indicate a commitment to increase the understanding of the markets and culture of trade in the respective countries. They allow for face to face meetings to find solutions to logistical challenges, payment gateways, product promotion and knowledge exchanges.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, trade interactions between Vietnam and South Africa have increased. There is opportunity and prospect as market sizes are favourable for cooperation in a range of sectors.
