Public meeting with Palestinian and Israeli activists

15 May 2017

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) will host Palestinian scholar Dr Adam Hanieh and activist Tali Shapiro on Monday the 22nd May (18h:30 at Constitution Hill, Women’s Jail/ Atrium). This public meeting will highlight issues of solidarity with the Palestinian struggle today including the plight of 1 600 political prisoners on hunger strike.

The prisoners are demanding basic rights such as proper medical care, an end to solitary confinement and ‘administrative detention’ - imprisonment without charge or trial, and an end to the denial of family visits.

Close to a month into their hunger strike the prisoners are facing severe health problems and harsh repression. The latter includes repeated and abusive transfers to other cells and prisons, solitary confinement and isolation, denial of access to appropriate water, confiscation of salt, frequent night-time raids involving confiscation of personal belongings including clothing and blankets and denial of legal and family visits.

The PSC together with former South African political prisoners and many organisations throughout the world condemn the Israeli state’s violation of international human rights treaties and humanitarian law. We believe that the impunity enjoyed by apartheid Israel can only be stopped through a boycott, divestment and sanction campaign in the same way apartheid South Africa was challenged. South Africans have a duty to show solidarity with Palestinians and we call on the South African state to translate their words into deeds by ending trade with apartheid Israel.

The PSC in collaboration with Palestine Festival SA will also host a photo exhibition of Palestinian political prisoners at Constitution Hill .The exhibition will open on the 15th May 2017 at 18h30 at the Atrium, Women’s Jail, and will run, leading up to the public meeting on the 22nd May 2017.
