Ambassador Sooklal was a guest of the University in November 2016 when he accompanied Deputy Minister Mfeketo for the SA – Kazakhstan Joint Bilateral Commission.  Ambassador Sooklal delivered a lecture entitled South Africa in the BRICS to students and staff of the faculty of International Relations and Regional Cooperation.

The faculty has over 800 student undergraduates, 200 post graduate students and the ENU provides instruction in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering and military science. On 5 July 2001 the University was granted a special national status by Presidential Decree, and significantly Lev Gumilyov who lends his name to the institution is one of the founders of Eurasianism.

During discussion with the Rector and members of the Faculty of International Relations it was agreed that academic cooperation between the ENU and South African academic institutions should be built, and that student and academic exchanges should be encouraged. Ambassador Sooklal was also invited to visit the University as a guest lecturer during 2017.

In addition to the Honorary title, in May 2016 Ambassador Sooklal was conferred an Adjunct Professorship in the Faculty of Law and Humanities at the Fujian Agricultural and Forestry University (FAF in China).
