1er FESTIDANZA TRUJILLO, PERU: 24 August 2011- 29 August 2011

By Dr Masitha Hoeane, Manager, University of Pretoria Arts

The University of Pretoria (UP) participated in the 1er Festidanza Trujillo (Peru) 24-29 August, 2011, an epic affair featuring folk dancers from all over the globe. From day one, the breath-taking spectacle brought Trujillo to a standstill. The curious citizenry spilled onto the streets to witness the world march by, each delegation in the full splendour and grandeur of colourful costumes, waving country flags to song, dance and much fanfare.

We came home laden with presents and medals but unity and cultural exchange ruled and won the day, amply evident both on and off the dance floors. Tribute must go the organizers of the festival who put up such a momentous and intensely memorable event. The University of Pretoria sent some 30 students to take part in the event and they received a crash module in cultural diversity and the value of cultural exchange.

The camaraderie, the explosive energy on the dance floors, the warm hospitality, the quality and range of talent, the rainbow costumes, the grace and flair of movement intelligence!

More such events point the road to a better world and deserve full support.

Participating countries were Peru, South Africa (University of Pretoria, Ovuwa), Canada, Italy, Russia, France, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Venezuela, Ukraine, Paraguay, Costa, Rica, Colombia.
